Festival des Lanternes de Montauban 2023 — “Le Jardin fantastique” — transformed the French botanical garden into an immersive lantern festival themed “A World of Fantasy, A Journey of Reverie.”

Blending Chinese lantern craftsmanship with French garden aesthetics, the event featured magical scenes like starry skies, mystical forests, and planets of light, making it one of the most popular Christmas and New Year celebrations in Montauban while highlighting Sino-French cultural exchange.

Featured Design:

The  lantern festival adopts “A World of Fantasy, A Journey of Reverie” as its theme and uses the ” Magic Hat” as the narrative thread to connect scenes such as “Star River Rafting”, “Magical Planet” and “Mysterical Forest”. It integrates traditional lantern craftsmanship with modern technology, naturally blends traditional Chinese symbols with French garden aesthetics, and creates an immersive light and shadow experience.

Seasonal Alignment:

The exhibition period coincides with the Christmas season and New Year holidays, making it a central choice for local festive activities. During Christmas, the lanterns in the botanical garden interact with the surrounding markets, allowing visitors to experience a festive atmosphere that blends Chinese and Western elements under the “Blue Starry Sky” lantern display.

1.Chinese intangible cultural heritage (ICH) craftsmanship is vividly showcased to European audiences, representing the international dissemination of ICH techniques

2.The Lantern Festival has also attracted widespread attention from mainstream Chinese and French media, becoming a highlight event for winter cross-cultural exchange.
