Birmingham Chinese Lantern Festival 2025
Birmingham Chinese Lantern Festival 2025–2026 — Lanterns of the Wild
The inaugural Birmingham Chinese Lantern Festival arrives at Twycross Zoo, Atherstone (UK) from 14 November 2025 to 22 February 2026, bringing together wildlife, storytelling, and illuminated spectacle under the theme “Lanterns of the Wild.”
As one of the UK’s newest large-scale winter lantern festivals, the project combines family entertainment, literary IP storytelling, and zoological education into a unique after-dark experience. Visitors can also explore more international projects through our Recent Projects .
Featured Design:
Inspired by the relationship between wildlife and storytelling, the festival is divided into ten immersive ecological zones, each representing a different habitat and visual atmosphere.
Themed zones include:
- Gruffalo & Friends in European Forests and Gardens
- North American Prairies & Boreal Forests
- Polar Regions
- Desert Ecosystems
- Asian Jungles
- South American Rainforests
- Cold-Water Oceans
- Tropical Seas
- African Forests
- African Savannahs
The route combines realistic animal-inspired lanterns with imaginative scenic environments, encouraging visitors to experience the diversity of global ecosystems through light, color, and narrative pacing. Seasonal pathways, illuminated canopies, and large-scale environmental backdrops help transform the zoo into an immersive wildlife lantern trail designed for families and evening exploration.
A defining feature of the project is its integration of The Gruffalo and Friends, creating a familiar emotional connection for children and families while enhancing the festival’s storytelling dimension. (See more about our Custom Lantern Design and Interactive Lighting Experiences)
Seasonal Alignment:
Running throughout the winter and holiday season, the festival provides a warm and visually dynamic nighttime attraction during the colder months in the UK. The illuminated ecological environments encourage slower-paced evening exploration, while the Gruffalo-themed storytelling creates a welcoming atmosphere for multi-generational visitors.
The combination of wildlife education, literary characters, and handcrafted lantern artistry positions the event as both a seasonal family destination and a large-scale cultural entertainment experience.
